42 Dogs Rescued from Neglectful Conditions in South Carolina

Forty-two dogs and puppies were rescued from a wooded property in rural South Carolina last week after authorities discovered them in deplorable conditions, including standing water, inflamed paws, and inadequate shelter.

Heartbreaking Discovery

The Animal Rescue Team, working with the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office and Charleston Animal Society, found dogs chained to the ground in inches of stagnant water, suffering from pain and exposed to extreme heat and rain. Fifteen puppies were found in kennels, eagerly greeting the rescuers.

Ongoing Investigation

While the situation is being investigated as alleged animal cruelty, the conditions mirror those frequently seen in dogfighting cases. All 42 Animals are now receiving veterinary care and support at Humane World for Animals.

Law Enforcement Training and Support

This rescue marks the tenth property in South Carolina where the team has assisted law enforcement in recovering dogs since last summer. The organization’s Law Enforcement Training Center has provided over 70 trainings to 20,000 law enforcement professionals across the state since 2021, focusing on veterinary forensics, neglect, and animal cruelty. Berkeley County officers have participated in key investigation courses.

New Legislation Enables Rescues

A new state law, passed unanimously in 2024, now allows for the immediate cost of care for seized Animals, eliminating the previous requirement for lengthy holds while criminal cases are prosecuted. This change significantly facilitates animal rescues and protection efforts.
