Chile Wildfires Force Family to Rescue Pets, Spark Humanitarian Response
Penco, Chile – A sudden shift in wind direction during a January dry season fueled devastating wildfires that ravaged the hills above Penco, Chile, forcing residents to evacuate and prompting a significant humanitarian response from Humane World for Animals.
Unexpected Wind Shift Ignites Rapidly Spreading Flames
Typically, ocean winds kept fires away from the city. However, this year, the wind reversed, driving flames down the forested hills, consuming plantations of dry pine and eucalyptus trees, and threatening the outskirts of Penco. Homes, vehicles, and entire buildings were destroyed as residents fled with their Animals.

Family Prioritizes Animal Rescue
Coni, a veterinary technician student, and her mother bravely rescued nine cats and three dogs, utilizing carriers to escape the flames. Coni even risked returning to save a sick and shocked cat, demonstrating a deep connection to her Animals.
Humanitarian Aid and Community Support
Following the fires, Humane World for Animals responders provided veterinary care, supplies, and shelter to displaced families and their pets. Coni’s family, whose home was destroyed, became unofficial ambassadors, assisting with the distribution of pet ID tags, litter, food, and other essential items. A team of responders treated injured Animals, reunited families with their lost pets, and worked with local authorities to conduct search and rescue operations.
Team’s Cultural Sensitivity
Daniela Sanchez, director of Humane World for Animals’ Chilean team, emphasized the team’s approach: "It starts with valuing who the other is and what they do, allowing us to identify needs and design how we support them." Felipe Márquez, program manager for disaster response, noted the team’s collaboration with municipalities and local groups, highlighting the importance of treating the affected community with cultural humility.
