India Campaign Aims to Sterilize 90% of Lucknow’s Street Dogs
Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh—Humane World for Animals India is launching a campaign to encourage residents to bring community dogs for free sterilization and anti-rabies vaccination at the Animal Birth Control Centre (ABC) in Jarhara. Billboards have been installed across Lucknow to promote the initiative.
Free Services Available for Community Dogs
Residents can schedule an appointment by calling 9336312853 or bring dogs to the ABC in Jarhara, Indiranagar, Lucknow, between 8:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m., Monday to Friday. According to Dr. Ratnesh Rao, senior manager at Humane World for Animals India, the billboards aim to raise awareness and allow residents to witness the organization's work firsthand.

Ambitious Goal for Lucknow
The organization’s goal is to make Lucknow one of the first cities in India to achieve 90% sterilization and vaccination coverage for community dogs, fostering safer and kinder communities for both people and animals. Sterilization is recognized by the Government of India’s Animal Birth Control Rules, 2023, as a key humane method for managing dog populations.
Program Background and Impact
Humane World for Animals India, in collaboration with the Lucknow Nagar Nigam, began the ABC program in Lucknow in 2019. Over 100,000 dogs have been sterilized to date, including Chitti, the 100,000th dog, who was rescued by a volunteer. The program sterilizes, vaccinates, and releases approximately 250-300 dogs each week. More than 32,000 public concerns related to street dogs have been addressed through humane interventions.
Global Efforts and Companion Animal Care
Humane World for Animals (formerly Humane Society International) works globally to improve the welfare of street, community, and companion animals. Since 2013, over 400,000 street dogs have been sterilized and vaccinated in India through their programs. The organization also focuses on increasing access to care for companion animals and preventing cruelty and abandonment in North America, South Africa, Mexico, India, Chile, and other regions.
