Over 150 Cats Rescued from Neglected Maryland Property

More than 150 cats were rescued from a Maryland property where they were allegedly suffering from neglect and inadequate care, according to Humane World for Animals. The Animal Rescue Team responded to a call from the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office after receiving reports of a cruelty situation on a 17-acre wooded property covered in nearly a foot of snow.

Initial Rescue and Conditions

Upon arrival, rescuers discovered over 100 cats, many digging in the snow to relieve themselves, with others emerging from sheds, chicken houses, and enclosures. The team ultimately rescued 111 cats that day, with additional Animals captured later in the week, bringing the total to over 150. The rescued cats were found to be suffering from various medical issues, including upper respiratory infections, dehydration, dental disease, and mites.

The team also discovered three recently deceased cats and the remains of many others who had died previously. A rabies-positive raccoon was found on the property, necessitating a four-month quarantine for the rescued cats. Many of the cats were friendly and microchipped, while others appeared feral and unsocialized.

Ongoing Placement Efforts

As of now, Humane World for Animals and its partners are working to place the rescued cats in foster homes and barn cat programs. The situation highlighted concerns about a purported ‘sanctuary’ that was accepting fees for spayed and neutered cats without providing adequate care.
