We're taking on the pet store and puppy mill interests in key flashpoint battles in Florida and Texas, where the core issue remains the same: ending the sale of puppy mill Animals in the retail marketplace to eliminate animal cruelty, consumer heartache, and bad faith.

In Florida, after a failed attempt to prohibit local ordinances, Petland and its allies are pushing SB 620, the Local Business Protection Act. This bill would allow businesses to seek damages from localities that pass ordinances affecting more than 15% of their revenue. In essence, if a city or county bans puppy sales, the store could claim lost revenue with taxpayer funds. We're mobilizing advocates to block this threat, as it aims to discourage more Florida communities from approving humane pet store ordinances, despite 83 localities already doing so.

In Texas, we're supporting pet store ordinances in three cities, including Dallas, the only major city without one. We believe it's time for Dallas to join the 10 other Texas cities that have taken a strong stance for Animals. Our case is strong, as the puppy mill-to-pet store pipeline flows directly through Dallas. Petland, the only puppy-selling pet store, claims to source from licensed breeders but purchased at least 40 puppies from an unregulated Missouri breeder in 2020, who was later arrested for animal cruelty. We're working to persuade the City Council to approve the ordinance and end this pipeline.
