Trump Administration Moves to Weaken Wolf Protections

Washington – The Humane World for Animals and Humane World Action Fund released a statement following President Donald Trump’s announcement of a new executive order aimed at reducingfederal protections for wolves.

Executive Order Targets Wolf Protections

The order, according to reports from USA Today and White House remarks, directs the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to reconsider federal protections for gray and Mexican wolves and pressure states to eliminate state-level protections. U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins cautioned against allowing ranchers to kill wolves at will.

Sara Amundson, president of Humane World Action Fund, expressed concern that the move is a “cynical gesture” given the harm caused by the Administration’s tariffs. She noted that wild carnivores account for less than 1% of livestock deaths and highlighted the ongoing struggle of wolf populations recovering from near extinction.

Call for Scientific Decision-Making

Kitty Block, president and CEO of Humane World for Animals, stated that “the war on wolves needs to end, not escalate,” emphasizing the need for science-based decisions regarding wolf survival and warning that weakening protections would jeopardize decades of recovery efforts. The executive order also directs U.S. Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum to prepare legislative recommendations.
